Training Houston
The Purse Building Remodel
The goal for this building and its programs is to be one link in the chain for helping improve the lives of each of its participants by providing the skills needed to secure and maintain a job, thus giving them the funds to secure safe and permanent housing while giving them the dignity of work. The building itself will focus on safety for all clients and staff and have respite areas for the staff and volunteers. The joint workspaces and hands-on learning will foster collaboration, organization, pride in work, a sense of belonging, dedication, and comfort. It will be a place that demonstrates hope, in word and environment, in what tomorrow may bring.

Design Concept:
The concept for the job training facility at the Purse Building is “AND.” This word joins ideas and concepts, both alike and seemingly opposed. This training facility joins things as well: men and skills, production and quality, the “down and out” and the “up and coming,” analytical and creative, old world and high tech, comfort and hard work, collaboration and personal accomplishment, organization and diligence, “them” and “us.” This facility will focus on giving the clients all the tools needed for them to create a better life, for themselves and their families, by providing job training for the construction industry, computer and technical education for owning a business, and people skills by working in the coffee shop and architectural salvage store. To complete the job-readiness journey, a Small Business Association, Chamber of Commerce, or non-profit job placement service is also able to office out of the building.
